Where are they now? The Crossfields Institute MSc alumni revisited

Life after the MSc in Practical Skills Therapeutic Education

Masters of Science in Practical Skills Therapeutic Education
Delivered by Crossfields Institute at the Field Centre in Horsley
Accredited by the University of the West of England

Between 2012 and 2016, we saw upwards of 50 students start and (almost all) finish this course with the last graduating at Bristol Cathedral in 2016, and these are just some of them.

So, what are they doing now? This is the first of a series of narratives about some of our alumni…….

Riverside House

Riverside House is a particularly beautiful and ecologically diverse site in the historic heart of Stourbridge. This derelict, early 19th Century, ironworks, was part of a conglomerate that was amongst the largest in the UK. Over the next several years it will be transformed into a heritage centre with gardens, restaurant, crafts shop, woodland and workshops, but also a place where people feel included and bespoke opportunities are provided.

This is a perfect environment that caters for the needs of a wide range of individuals to engage in practical skills activities through the actual conservation and preservation of the Riverside House estate. Practical skills have a proven efficacy in providing outcomes such as improvements in well-being, self-esteem, social inclusivity and physical health.

This is the creation of one of our MSc alumni – Lloyd Stacey – Founder and managing director of Riverside House.

Philosophy and Practice of Integrative Education

This postgraduate certificate programme is for upper school (secondary school) teachers who would like to develop an integrative teaching practice to meet the changing needs of young people today. The programme offers students an overview of contemporary approaches to teaching, learning and assessment. It also covers collaborative and action research methods to develop new ways of working within a school or teaching faculty.

The programme also explores Steiner-based educational principles and the philosophical and developmental picture of the human being that informs them. Through this programme, students are offered the practical tools and theoretical understanding to innovate and develop their practice within the context of their place of work. This programme prepares teachers to work with the international ACTS (Acknowledging Creative Thinking Skills) approach to 14 to 19 education.

New regulated qualification in Community Orcharding

Crossfields Institute and the Orchard Project are delighted to announce the launch of an Ofqual regulated qualification in England in Community Orcharding.

Crossfields Institute Level 3 Certificate in Community Orcharding
is now open for registrations.

This qualification is designed for people who want to develop the understanding, knowledge and skills to be able to care for fruit and nut trees, build biodiverse habitats and contribute to a community orchard project.

The drive behind creating this unique qualification is the growing interest in urban green spaces as a means of assisting community cohesion and allowing for outdoor spaces to be used for the benefit of people, to promote biodiversity and create wildlife habitats in cities, towns and villages. Community orchards are a good way of generating human engagement with nature.

The Orchard Project is the only national charity dedicated solely to the creation, restoration and celebration of community orchards. Working closely with community groups in hubs around England and Scotland, the aim of the Project is to help to designing and creating new orchards that will last for decades to come.
