As a learner you may have questions about enrolling on a Crossfields Institute programme. Here are answers to some of the more frequently asked questions.
How are credit and level measured?
Credit is a currency for learning which can be used to compare learning and qualifications. Learners can build the credit they achieve toward a qualification. Credit level starts from entry level and goes all the way up to level 8 (PhD). The gaining of credit is dependent upon the learner meeting the necessary assessment criteria. Credit shows the learner how much learning they have achieved, and credits can be added together to make up whole qualifications.
What are assessment criteria?
Assessment Criteria are the elements of a unit that demonstrate that the learner has achieved a section of learning. Assessment Criteria are always preceded by “the learner can”. The verb that follows this phrase gives an indication of the level of learning. To achieve credit for learning, the learner will be asked to complete assessment activities to show clearly what they have learnt.
Can I use existing evidence from programmes undertaken before I registered as a learner?
Learners can use evidence of learning achieved prior to registration on their current course. For details please contact our Quality Assurance department.
Will I have to do an exam at the end of my programme?
Very few of Crossfields Institute’s programmes are assessed using tests or exams. The emphasis is on allowing the learner the best opportunity to display their skills.
What types of assessment evidence can be used?
A wide range of evidence is acceptable. Ideally it should integrate into the learning and allow the learner to produce evidence as part of the learning experience. There are lots of different types of assessment e.g. projects, role play, practical demonstrations etc. all of which can be used to produce evidence of achievement.
Why should I complete the assessment for my unit?
Accrediting learning not only celebrates achievement but also proves that learning has met a recognised standard and is quality assured. Completing the assessment criteria for a unit ensures a level of competence.
What if I have special requirements?
If a learner has specific needs, a disability, suffers illness or experiences problems, there are ways that they can be supported in their assessment. Learners should approach their tutor or staff at their centre at the beginning of the programme.
Copies of our policies are available on the Resources page.
What should I do if there are inaccuracies on my certificate?
If there are any errors on a learner certificate, the learner should inform their centre in the first instance. Having told the centre what the error is, the centre will inform Crossfields Institute and we will re-issue a certificate with the correct details to the centre within 5 working days of a written request from the centre.
