The Dewe Project, Uganda

School for Art, Practical Science and Environment

Dewe is a fishing village between Entebbe and Kampala on the edge of Lake Victoria, Uganda. It is 75 km from the Equator so it has a tropical climate

"I wanted to create a space for human interaction focussing on art and creativity, developing awareness and practising matters concerning and relating to the environmental issues and building bridges between humans of different races".

Sam Mukumba Kamegere

Having worked at Ruskin Mill in Gloucestershire and studied Social Sculpture at Oxford Brookes University, Sam Mukumba was inspired to turn his centre in Uganda into a place of social and environmental innovation and artistic creativity. The local community is very poor and many of the children cannot afford to go to school, so the Dewe project is building up a small school to serve the local community and is providing other basic necessities for local children, such as clothing, school bags, bed sheets etc.

Sustainable farming methods are also being introduced in the production of honey, vegetables, herbs and medicinal plants for the local and wider community.

Traditional arts and crafts are also taught on the site including wood carving and pottery and international artists and volunteers visit the project to teach, make art and help.

the Dewe Poject is also a Crossfields Institute affiliate and we would like to help them to raise much needed funds. We will shortly set up a donations account from this page. In the mean time, if you would like to donate, please contact Sam Makumba direct on mukumba8@googlemail.com
